Nico Müller will compete in his 50th Formula E race this weekend at the Jeddah E-Prix, Round 4 of the 2024-25 Formula E season. Having been involved in the series since Season 6, the Swiss driver has raced for four different teams, accumulating one podium and 99 championship points.

Early career

Müller spent four years in karting before making the jump to single seaters in 2008. After just two seasons in the Swiss Formula Renault series, the young man from Thun (Switzerland) was already the Swiss champion.

The following year, at just 17 years-old, Müller made the step up to GP3 with the Jenzer team that led him to championship glory the previous year. Claiming victory in the opening round, he went on to finish third in the championship, behind eventual champion and former F1 driver Esteban Gutierrez.

The following three years proved uneventful for Müller until he was signed as an Audi works driver in 2014. The same season, the Swiss driver made the move to Germany to race in DTM for the joint Audi Sport Team.

Over the course of a three-year spell jumping between DTM, Rallycross, GT and stock cars, Müller grew his impressive collection of motorsport achievements, racking up race wins across multiple series including the prestigious Nürburgring 24h in 2015, as well as coming runner up in the 2019 DTM title fight.

Formula E career

During the 2017/18 season, Müller began to test the waters of Formula E. As an Audi works driver he initially signed as a reserve driver for the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team, gaining invaluable experience in what is a very unique series.

The experienced racer took part in the inaugural Marrakesh rookie test in 2018, topping the timesheets on his Formula E debut.

The following season Müller graduated to a full time role in Formula E with Geox Dragon in what was their only season in Formula E. The team propped up the timing sheets and Müller struggled to show his racing capabilities, managing a personal best finish of 12th twice that season.

The following season saw Geox Dragon rebranded to Dragon/Penske Autosport and with it came much better results. With 3 finishes within points-scoring positions across 7 races, including a second place finish in Valencia, Müller was beginning to show his racing prowess.

Unfortunately his team didn’t seem to think it was enough, and the Swiss racer was dropped half way through the season, and wouldn’t return until Season 9.

Nico Müller’s Formula E return in season 9

Müller’s long awaited return to Formula E came in Season 9 where the Thun-born driver was partnered with Robin Frijns at the new ABT Cupra outfit.

The ABT team was plagued with poor pace and Müller, once again, propped up the timesheets, spending the majority of his season outside of the points and managing only four points scoring races all season.

The following season showed signs of improvement as Müller cemented his place at ABT, alongside experienced teammate Lucas Di Grassi. The pair managed to give the team a ninth place finish in the championship, racking up 56 points with Müller contributing 52 of these, leaving the Swiss driver 12th in the standings.

His impressive performances in comparison to teammate, veteran Lucas Di Grassi earned Müller a promotion to Andretti Formula E team, Season 9 Driver’s world champions, where he partnered up with Formula E world champion Jake Dennis.

“I’m very excited to join the Andretti Formula E Team," said Müller in an interview with Formula E. "It’s a team that has seen success from the very beginning of the championship, particularly in the GEN3 era in their partnership with Porsche Motorsport.

"To work with Jake, a former World Champion, is an honour and I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I’m going to give it my very best to contribute to the team’s success and hopefully aim for some podiums and my first Formula E win – that's the target. I can't wait to get going.”

The Swiss driver has certainly embedded himself well within the team, securing a crucial points finish in Mexico City, sacrificing his position to help teammate Dennis to fourth in the race.

Had it not been for a technical problem which caused a sudden loss of speed, forcing Mitch Evans to run into the back of him, he could have easily finished higher - but getting any number of points was much better than what he was used to at his old teams.

As the team heads to Jeddah for Müller’s 50th race at the second half of the double-header, the 32 year-old (who is quickly becoming a veteran of the sport) is still seeking his first Formula E win. He could not have asked for a better team than Andretti, who seem to be in strong contention for championship victory this season.
