Mercedes has confirmed that the multiple Formula E race winner and former F1 driver will take up a permanent position at the team, taking up some of the responsibilities created by the departure of James Vowles.
D’Ambrosio will help the team by aiding young drivers under the Mercedes academy globally. He will team up with Gwen Lagrue who is currently responsible for the driver programme for the manufacturer, and a key player in the careers of George Russell and Esteban Ocon.
The former driver for Lotus and Virgin Racing in the 2011-12 seasons was recently Team Principal in 2021 for the Venturi Formula E Team finishing second in the Constructors Championship, scoring 10 podiums.
There was speculation during the pre-season test in Bahrain, where D’Ambrosio was seen actively engaging in conversation in the Mercedes garages. It prompted at the time that D’Ambrosio was in line for a future role at the team, but Mercedes soon rejected this, stating that Belgium was only there to observe their operations.
