Edoardo Mortara’s six-year run with the newly-branded Maserati MSG Racing team is set to come to a close. The Swiss driver will not be suiting up in blue for the 2024 season.
Mortara ended the 2023 season with an unusually poor performance, failing to secure a single podium or pole position. The year mirrored the racing driver’s 2020 season, when he had a similar measly fight in the front, and a best finish of fourth.
Maximilian Günther, Mortara’s teammate, outshined the thirty-six-year-old driver by securing the team’s first win in a single-seater series since 1957.
Maserati is the only team Mortara has driven for in Formula E. From its debut as Venturi Formula E Team, in Mortara’s debut year, to ROKiT Venturi Racing in seasons six through eight to the newest reiteration, Maserati MSG Racing, Mortara has been there for all three rebrandings.
Mortara helped secure the team 422 points throughout his career in the electric racing series, along with six appearances on the top podium step.
“The past six years of my career have been quite a journey, and it has been an honour to represent the team during this time,” Mortara said. “Since 2017, we have experienced a lot together, it’s been a rollercoaster at times and by learning from the tough moments we faced, we grew to become a competitive outfit, fighting for race wins and World Championships. I’m proud of the role I played in this. I want to take this opportunity to thank the team for their trust in me and their support. I wish them the best of luck for the future.”
Despite his 14th-place finish in the championship standings, the team praised Mortara for his hard work.
“His resilience helped the team in achieving positive results and to contributing to the outcome of Maserati’s first season in the all-electric series; he also demonstrated his capability to recover from difficult moments,” Giovanni Sgro, the head of Maserati Corse, said in a press release. “He is a successful driver and we have been delighted and honoured for him to have been a standard-bearer for the Trident all over the world.”
Mortara has not confirmed if he will move to another team within the series, or continue his racing career elsewhere.
