Formula 1 is set to modify the current reprimand rules for the start of the 2022 season. The previous reprimand rule will be increased in the 2022 F1 season, as drivers will be able to receive five reprimands within a single season - up from three reprimands as stated for the 2021 season.
In previous seasons, drivers faced the threat of a ten-place grid penalty if they were to receive three reprimands in a single season, this has now been upped to five, but the same infringement of a ten-place grid drop.
It has also been noted that preceding encounters that are not driving infractions, such as Sebastian Vettel's failure to remove a t-shirt for the Hungarian national anthem, will not be imposed as a reprimand.
Auto Motor und Sport has noted that this change in regulation has risen as a result of the correlating increased number of races during the season, which has been upped to 23 races in the upcoming 2022 calendar. This rule was originally included in a season where there were only 17 races.
In the 2021 season, eight drivers on the grid received single reprimands that breached the sporting regulation, whereas Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, and Esteban Ocon received a second infringement in the 22 race calendar. Hopefully, this increased amount of reprimands will limit the risk that drivers have for being penalised towards the end of the season, as shown by Hamilton's close-call with the stewards in Abu-Dhabi’s free practice season with Mazepin.
