On the eve of the Formula 3 finale, the FIA revealed the all-new car to be used in competition from 2025 to 2027. What are the key differences between the car that finished the 2024 season versus this? DIVEBOMB tells you all you need to know.

Design

The design philosophy mirrors that of the new Dallara F2 2024 car in appearance, with the front and rear wings trying to give a post-2022 Formula 1 feel. The goal is to give young drivers a smooth path to advance up to F2 and eventually F1.

A wider tyre will also be used – featuring a 16-inch rim as opposed to the 13-inch currently supplied by Pirelli. This mirrors F2’s tyre switch in 2020 and F1’s from 2021. As the press release stated, the tyres “will have a natural rubber component certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).”

Internal components

Internal components of the car remain mostly the same. The engine remains a six-cylinder 3.4-litre naturally aspirated 380-horsepower piece.

DRS and in-car marshalling also remain, but a Vehicle Control Unit – produced by Marelli – will be present in the gearbox. This again mirrors the VCU used by F2. In addition, the current Hewland gearbox will now be supplied by 3Mo.

Reliability

This car has gone through extensive testing to ensure reliability. Throughout the year, former F2 driver Tatiana Calderon has covered a total of 2,000 kilometres. Testing will continue throughout the off-season.

Additionally, current F1 Academy driver Chloe Chambers has been testing a modified version of the current F3 car to mirror the F3 2025. She completed 97 laps over two days in Silverstone.

The aim is to deliver teams their first cars in December and the other two one month later. Drivers and teams will not test the machinery until the officially sanctioned pre-season tests.

Sustainability

The F3 2025 will run on Aramco’s advanced fuel in compliance with the FIA’s claim to be 100% sustainably fuelled in 2025. These changes will also be seen in F2.

The FIA continues its attempts at cost-effectiveness and driver comfortability as well, featuring new paddles and handles on the steering wheel
