The motorsport paddock rung in the New Year with yet more driver changes in the past seven days, with Formula 3, and F1 Academy making more additions to their respective grids for 2024. Catch the news in our round-up, along with a special mention of Divebomb's sponsored driver John Bennett
Carrie Schreiner Switches to Campos Racing
As for F1 Academy, Carrie Schreiner will move to Campos Racing to contest in her second season in the series. Schreiner will act as Sauber Academy’s nomination, offering both expertise and support to the young German.
Following the announcement, Schreiner stated: “After an exciting first season, I'm looking forward to getting back to work. Sauber has an impressive motorsport history and I want to play my part in continuing its success story in F1 Academy.”
Finishing 11th in the standings last time around, Schreiner will be looking to set her sights higher in this year’s championship. With a race win and consistent points scoring positions already under her belt, her experience will no doubt aid her success and strengthen this partnership in return.
“My goal for this season is only one: to win, and to do so flying the flag for the team, while generating more awareness for women in motorsport.”
Team Principal of Campos Racing, Adrian Campos Jr, shared his excitement at the addition of Schreiner to their lineup, stating:
“We are delighted to welcome Carrie to the team, and to begin a new collaboration with Sauber. Both our outfits boast vast experience in nurturing and raising the champions of tomorrow, and we cannot wait to get started. Carrie is a well-experienced driver and alongside Campos Racing, we expect to convert it into strong results working together.”
Callum Voisin joins FIA F3 with Rodin Motorsport
After winning a closely contested GB3 Championship in 2023, Callum Voisin will join FIA Formula 3 with Rodin Motorsport. The Brit has already started to get experience in the car, participating in the Jerez, Barcelona and Imola tests.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be staying with Rodin Carlin for the 2024 FIA F3 season,” Voisin said of his promotion. “It is a dream of mine to race alongside the Formula 1 stage, so I can’t wait to get started with pre-season testing in Bahrain.
There is plenty for me to learn, not least new tracks and a different car. I am immensely grateful to Rodin Carlin, RDA and Edge management for making this possible.”
In 2023, Voisin had a memorable sophomore GB3 season, where he took two wins, six poles and 11 podiums en route to his first title in single-seaters. He beat out talents on the British ladder such as Alex Dunne and Joseph Loake in the finale.
Rodin Motorsport’s F3 Team Manager, Sam Waple, explained his optimism for the upcoming season. “I’m so pleased that Callum will be joining our FIA F3 team for the upcoming season.
Callum has been part of the wider Rodin Carlin team for the past two seasons so being able to build on that strong working relationship is something I’m incredibly happy we can continue.
Despite the learning curve ahead, I have no doubt that Callum will be a huge asset to the team following what was a brilliant GB3 Championship winning campaign.”
Matias Zagazeta joins FIA F3 with Jenzer
Jumping up from FRECA, Peruvian driver Matias Zagazeta is the first driver confirmed by Swiss team Jenzer Motorsport. Coming off two seasons of Formula Regional, Zagazeta took part in the post-season test and Macau Grand Prix with the team.
Zagazeta shared a great deal of excitement in his announcement:
“I am delighted to confirm that I will be driving for Jenzer Motorsport for the 2024 FIA F3 season. It is an incredible opportunity for me, and I can’t thank Jenzer enough for this opportunity and to my sponsors for making this possible.
Working already with the team during testing and the Macau Grand Prix helped us understand the position we are in and get to know the team. I am excited to see what next year will bring and we will work hard to achieve some memorable results together.”
Jenzer Team Principal, Andreas Jenzer, explained what he thinks the Peruvian prospect will bring to the team.
“We are looking forward to continue working with Matias after getting to know him in testing and Macau. He is a great young racing driver with a big passion and strong motivation.
It takes a big heart to step up to the third highest level of motorsport, and we are happy that Matias will be at the steering wheel of one of our FIA F3 racing machines this season. Let’s get some great results together.”
Bennett gears up for winter campaign
This weekend, John Bennett will take part in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship, partnering with Evans GP in their maiden season. The Brit is coming off a season of GB3, where he finished 10th in the overall standings.
After the signing, Bennett said, “I’m really looking forward to 2024, Evans is obviously a super competitive team. I really liked speaking with Josh and meeting him over the past couple of weeks.
Both he and his team obviously have a history of success in the championship over the past couple of years. Looking forward to working with the new team and seeing what we can achieve in the Middle East.”
Team Principal, Joshua Evans, shares similar optimism to Bennett:
“We are pleased to welcome John Bennett to Evans GP. His track record and skills align with our team’s ethos of excellence and professionalism. Paired with Costa Toparis, we anticipate a competitive performance in the 2024 Formula Regional Middle East Championship.”
