“It’s going to happen”, says Günther amid calendar expansion rumours

As Formula E embarks on its next month-long break, questions still remain over the possibility of further calendar expansion for 2026.  With numerous circuits and cities rumoured to be battling over a 2026 slot, the question of how many races are sustainable remains.

Divebomb sat down with Jake Dennis earlier in the year, and when asked about calendar expansion, Dennis was elated with the possibility of the calendar moving to 20+ races. Off the back of his win in Jeddah, Maximilian Günther was in support of Dennis, and the prospect of a growing calendar as Formula E faces its third month-long break from racing.

It's an issue that is growing in the series as fans and drivers alike demand more races to keep fans entertained while also allowing drivers to stay ‘in the flow’ of racing.

“As a racing driver, you always want to race,” said Günther in his post-race interview. “I think we have a great calendar in terms of locations, and it’s outstanding where we are able to race with a Formula E car.”

“I think it’s a good balance to have these single events and double headers like a mix between the two; we manage it really well as a championship to get the balance of them.”

Discussions are already being held about new locations for next year's calendar, with Santiago in Chile rumoured to be returning and races in Cape Town and Phoenix also being considered. Since Season 1, the series has visited more than 30 different circuits in its first decade of racing, and the prospect of further circuits being added is looking likely.

“I think it’s going to happen naturally,” said Günther about the calendar expanding to 20-plus races. “I think the rhythm we have from April to the end of the season is a good one, so if you could just fit the same rhythm into this, then that would be ideal.”

Formula E visited the Saudi coast in Jeddah for the inaugural Jeddah E-Prix, which saw Oliver Rowland extend his lead at the top of the championship with a win in the second race and Günther claim his first win in DS Penske colours. Next on the calendar is a return to Miami, for the first time since Season 1, another new addition to the 2025 calendar.

But as circuits are added, others are lost, and last year saw the departure of three circuits: Misano in Italy (which now doesn’t hold a slot on the calendar), Diriyah in Saudi (which was replaced by Jeddah) and Portland (which was also replaced by Miami).

There comes a limit though, and, with Formula E already on 16 races, 6 of those featuring double-headers, the question of when to stop with calendar expansion isn’t unique to Formula E.

“I think a few more,” said Günther when posed the question of where the limit lies. “You have to take into mind that there are so many team members working on this project and out season, to fit like 20 single headers into 7 months would be difficult on human resources.”
