The 2023 Grand Prix of Kazakhstan has been called off from the MotoGP calendar, meaning the 2023 MotoGP season will not be the longest in the history of the series.
Anticipating a final approval at the track homologation stage, MotoGP added two extra races from Kazakhstan and India to the provisional schedule for 2023.
However, the 2023 Grand Prix of Kazakhstan had to be cancelled due to ongoing homologation work at the circuit and existing operational issues on a worldwide scale.
A brief statement from FIM said: "The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports can confirm the cancellation of the 2023 Kazakhstan GP." This was later confirmed by Dorna Sports, the organisers of the MotoGP championship.
The new Sokol International Circuit, which is close to Almaty, was scheduled to host the Kazakhstan Grand Prix over the weekend of July 7th-9th. However, MotoGP organisers have expressed interest in hosting the event in 2024.
The event will not be replaced for 2023. As such, the mid-season summer break is set to last for five weeks, the gap being between the Dutch GP at Assen in late June, and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in early-August.
Elsewhere, despite potential rumours over the Grand Prix of India being called off for the same reason, the race is still set to go ahead as per its slot on the calendar, in late October, unless announced otherwise.
