Kevin Magnussen has been handed a one race ban after a collision with Pierre Gasly during the Italian Grand Prix. Magnussen had already accumulated 10 penalty points, which put him at a heavy risk of receiving a race ban. But a collision with Gasly has pushed him to 12 penalty points, as the Dane will now receive a race ban.
Magnussen will be forced to sit out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in two weeks time as a result.
Magnussen's incident with Gasly came midway through the race, the Haas driver attempted to make a move on the Alpine into Turn 4, the pair making contact as Gasly was forced to skip through the chicane.
Magnussen had 10 penalty points prior to the Italian Grand Prix, for incidents over the last year including: three points for colliding with Alexander Albon at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, two points for colliding with Yuki Tsunoda at the Chinese Grand Prix, three points for leaving the track and gaining an advantage in the Miami Sprint race, two points for colliding with Logan Sargeant in the Miami Grand Prix, and now a further two points for this incident with Gasly.
Magnussen will be the first driver in F1 to receive a notable ban since Romain Grosjean back in 2012 after he caused a major incident in the Belgian Grand Prix that year.
The Italian Grand Prix also saw Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg receive penalties for contact and forcing another driver off the circuit.
Kevin Magnussen's penalty points in 2024
Saudi Arabian GP - Contact with Alex Albon - 3 points
Chinese Grand Prix - Contact with Yuki Tsunoda - 2 points
Miami Sprint Race - Leaving the track and gaining an advantage - 3 points
Miami Grand Prix - Colliding with Logan Sargeant - 2 points
Italian Grand Prix - Colliding with Pierre Gasly - 2 points
It is expected that Oliver Bearman, who previously stepped in for Ferrari at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and will race for Haas next year, will fill the seat in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
