LECLERC TAKES POLE IN BAKU

The qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was off to a chaotic start and was red flagged soon after. Lance stroll crashed into the barriers at Turn 15 and failed to set a time.

Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi too fell prey to the same corner which called for another red flag. He was unable to put a time on the sheets.

The Haas of Nikita Mazepin was in trouble at turn 4 which called for a yellow flag with a minute and 20 seconds on the clock for the end of Q1.

At the end of Q1, the starting grid showed Antonio Giovinazzi at P20, Lance at P19 owing to the turn 15 incident. The Haas’ of Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher at 18th and 17th respectively and Nicholas Latifi at P16.

Q2 saw Max set an impressive 1:41.625 followed by Checo who was only 0.005 seconds behind. Q2 was also red flagged following McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo in the barrier at Turn 3.

It was decided to not restart the session, resulting in much disappointment for Sebastian Vettel who missed a Q3 appearance by only three hundredths of a second.

Vettel will be starting tomorrow’s race down in P11, followed by Alpine’s Estaban Ocon in 12th and Ricciardo in 13th because of the incident at turn 3. Kimi will be starting 14th followed by George in P15.

Yuki made his Q3 debut while Lando started the session with a threat of a penalty as he was being investigated for a red flag related incident.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was on provisional pole and Gasly matched his best ever qualifying time.

With two minutes on the clock, pretty much all the drivers in Q3 started their flying lap. Yuki Tsunoda caused a red flag at turn 3, followed by Sainz who had a lock up.

With the red flag called on session Charles took the ninth pole of his career, with Lewis in second while his teammate Bottas will start in P10. Verstappen starts in P3, Alpha Tauri’s Gasly in P4, Norris in P6. Carlos will start in P5 and Yuki in P8, owing to the red flag.
