Maserati MSG Racing have announced their decision to commit to Formula E until the end of 2030, when the upcoming Gen4 era will end. The decision ensures Stellantis powered-cars will remain in the series all the way up until season 16 of Formula E.
Maserati first joined Formula E at the beginning of the Gen3 era in 2023, at the start of season nine. The Italian marque acquired the assets of the erstwhile Rokit Venturi team, that had run as a sister outfit to the senior Mercedes EQ team, who also left Formula E at the end of the Gen2 era in 2022.
Owned by the Monaco Sports Group (MSG), the Modena-based team commenced their first season in the series with Edoardo Mortara at the wheel, alongside the incoming Maximilian Gunther. The latter scored the team's first victory in the sport in Jakarta.
It was a standout weekend when he topped every practice and qualifying session. The German only missed out on a victory in the first race of the weekend, thereby denied a clean sweep of proceedings.
Gunther also took the team to podiums in Berlin and Rome during the year, home podiums for driver and team respectively. It was a successful first outing for the team in blue, who finished sixth in the standings with 140 points to their name.
The German also took victory in Formula E's inaugural visit to Tokyo earlier this year, before being promoted to third after Antonio Felix Da Costa's disqualification at Misano. He was also joined by Jehan Daruvala for season ten, after Mortara departed the team to join Mahindra Racing.
The team have taken a total of six podiums in their Formula E career, alongside two victories and two pole positions. Maserati finished eighth in the table at the end of season ten, with 81 points to their name.
Ahead of season eleven, the team have opted for an all-new line-up. Stoffel Vandoorne joins the team from DS Penske, while Jake Hughes moved over from NEOM McLaren to the trident team, to replace the outgoing duo of DS-bound Gunther, and Daruvala.
Maserati become the fifth team to confirm their commitment to the upcoming Gen4 era, after Nissan, Jaguar, Lola ABT Yamaha and Porsche, who already announced their decisions earlier in the year.
Further details regarding the commitments of Stellantis brands to the GEN4 era will be announced in due course. Maserati is one of the two brands forming the conglomerate to take part in the series — the other being DS Penske.
The upcoming Gen4 era of Formula E in 2026 represents the next generation of Formula E technology. It will debut in Season 13 (2026/27) with a brand-new car hitting the track.
The Gen4 era promises groundbreaking innovations, including regeneration capacity of up to 700kW, increased power output of up to 600kW, and cutting-edge safety enhancements. These advancements will provide a dynamic new challenge for manufacturers while offering insights that accelerate the development of road-going electric vehicles.
Santo Ficili, Chief Executive Officer, Maserati, was proud to express Maserati's continuity in Formula E, as he looked forward to the future:
“We are extremely proud to continue our commitment to as prestigious and innovative a platform as Formula E. For this brand, the bond between the track and the road is unbreakable and the evolution of the single-seaters shows how many possibilities for development electric mobility holds." Ficii said.
"We will continue to draw major developments from the races in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, to transfer them into our 100% electric range that now consists of the Grecale Folgore SUV, the iconic GranTurismo Folgore and the GranCabrio Folgore convertible”.
Jeff Dodds, the CEO of Formula E, too expressed his delight to confirm another new name to the Gen4 era of Formula E:
"We are thrilled to confirm Maserati’s continued commitment to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship by registering for the GEN4 era, alongside Stellantis Motorsport," Dodds said.
"They have both been a valuable part of our championship, and have demonstrated remarkable performances on track, while driving forward electric vehicle technology that benefits everyday road users," he continued, speaking of Maserati's legacy.
"Their ongoing involvement alongside other global OEMs such as Nissan, Jaguar, Porsche and Lola, is a testament to Formula E's status as a competitive and relevant platform for the future of electric mobility. We can't wait to see the House of Trident continue its journey with Formula E and build into a new era of enhanced performance, innovation and on track action," Dodds concluded.
