Maximilian Günther will continue to compete for the Maserati MSG Formula E team in the upcoming 2024 Formula E season.
Günther stood out as a force in the all-electric motorsport series in 2023. After a rollercoaster of four seasons, the German driver’s fifth season in Formula E, and debut season with Maserati proved a bright future may be ahead.
The 26-year-old outscored his teammate, finishing seventh in the championship standings compared to team mate Mortara’s 14th-place finish. With one win, two poles, and four podiums, Günther made history with Maserati, as he brought the first win to the team in a single-seater world championship series since 1957.
You could argue if 2023 was indeed Gunther's breakthrough season, as he seemed a rejuvenated driver, and has transformed himself into one of the biggest names on the grid, going into 2024. He showed he's got tremendous pace, topping every free practice session, and winning out both qualifying sessions at Jakarta. He only missed out on a win at race one, finishing third, though, highlighting how good his weekend was.
He also showcased some brilliant overtaking skills, as he displayed a stupendous, last-lap overtake on Envision Racing's Sebastian Buemi at his home race in Berlin, snatching the final spot on the podium. He also finished on the podium at the team's home race in Rome, passing eventual champion Jake Dennis late in the race to take the podium spot.
As Günther solidifies himself as the latest young hot shot, 2024 will determine how he navigates a new era of performance for Maserati.
Jehan Daruvala signs with Maserati MSG Racing for Season Ten
Gunther's partner-in-crime for 2024 will be in the form of current MP Motorsport racer Jehan Daruvala, who was also reserve driver at Mahindra for Season Nine.
The winner of the old Force India F1 Team’s “One-in-a-million” contest, the 24-year old racer is currently in his fourth season of Formula 2, driving for his third constructor in the series, MP Motorsport.
Having joined the championship in 2020, Jehan initially drove for the Carlin team (now Rodin Carlin), alongside current AlphaTauri youngster Yuki Tsunoda. While Tsunoda found his way to third in the standings, Jehan finished much lower down in 12th position, with 72 points to his name. He took a maiden Formula 2 victory at Bahrain, the finale of a largely-truncated season.
Now into his fourth season in the series, Daruvala drives for MP Motorsport alongside his former Prema teammate, Dennis Hauger. Jehan’s season kicked off on a relatively strong note, with a brace of podiums at Jeddah early on, but that was as high as it got so far. The 24-year old has experienced a tough season, holding onto 12th place in the standings with only 53 points to his name so far.
Daruvala was brought into the Mahindra Racing outfit as a reserve driver in late 2022, and has previously spoken of Formula E being a future avenue to display his skills. Having been let go from the Red Bull Driver Academy at the end of 2022, the odds of the Indian driver taking up a Mahindra seat in the future looked a strong possibility.
The MP Motorsport driver has also enriched his F2 duties with reserve driver duties in Formula E, taking part in the in-season rookie tests at Berlin and Rome this year.
