Written by Hugh W

In a move that solidifies his commitment to McLaren, British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris has inked a new multi-year contract with the team, extending his stay beyond the 2026 season. The announcement, made by McLaren CEO Zak Brown, comes just as Norris' previous deal, signed in 2022, was set to expire at the end of 2025.

The contract renewal for Norris is a strategic move by McLaren to preemptively secure their star driver amid potential interest from rival teams, including Red Bull and Audi. Although the exact duration of the contract was not disclosed, it is expected to run for at least two years into 2027, with the possibility of additional options.

Zak Brown expressed his satisfaction with the deal, stating, “A multi-year extension that goes well beyond his current contract.” This move follows McLaren's commitment to Oscar Piastri, who signed a contract extension last year, ensuring the team's driver lineup is confirmed until at least the end of 2026.

In response to the contract extension, Lando Norris expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s a great feeling to be staying in papaya. I’ve grown up with McLaren and feel at home here, the team are like family to me." Norris, who made his F1 debut in 2019, has spent his entire career with McLaren and is optimistic about the team's future, saying, "I’m excited to create more amazing memories and continue working hard with everyone at MTC for the next few years.”

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella emphasized the commitment and confidence shared between Norris and the team, highlighting their joint ambition to win championships in the future. Norris played a crucial role in McLaren's progress last season, securing seven podiums with standout performances.

The announcement of Norris's contract renewal follows Ferrari's confirmation of Charles Leclerc's extension, taking two top-tier drivers off the market within 24 hours. Brown noted, “I’m delighted that we’re continuing our relationship with Lando for multiple years to come," emphasising Norris's commitment to pushing McLaren back to the front of the grid.

Norris concluded his most successful season in 2023, finishing sixth in the standings with six second-placed finishes. Although he is yet to claim his first victory, his notable progress and partnership with McLaren have laid a solid foundation for the team's aspirations to compete at the highest level of Formula 1.
