PETECOF DROPS OUT OF FORMULA 2 DUE TO FINANCIAL REASONS

Formula 2 driver Gianluca Petecof has announced that he will be departing from the series after just 2 rounds. The Brazilian will not be participating in the next round in Baku as well due to financial reasons.

Petecof who won the Formula Regional Europe Cup in 2020 was promoted to Formula 2 this season to race with Campos. Financial constraints however plagued the 18 year old driver, as he’d admitted in an interview with Brazilian journalist Lito Cavalcanti after the round in Monaco.

A week later the Brazilian disclosed he will no longer be racing through a tweet stating.

“I’m not racing the F2 Baku stage this weekend. Thank you very much to Campos for the opportunity to work with them at this beginning, and I don’t know how to thank and repay you for all your support over the past few months.”

A replacement driver for the Brazilian is yet to be announced but many speculate Campos could opt for last season’s runner up Callum Ilott who is scheduled to be in Baku this week.

Gianluca Petecof has become the second driver to drop out of Formula 2 after just three rounds with Matteo Naninni who was running a dual campaign in F2 and F3 opting to stick with the latter. Another driver who’s been plagued by financial constraints on the F2 grid is Richard Verschoor who despite being ninth in the Driver’s Standings with MP Motorsport still participates on a race by race basis.

This comes on the back of Lewis Hamilton’s comments that F1 has become a billionaire boy’s club, a sentiment that was shared by his team principal Toto Wolff.
