Ricciardo blasts ‘Idiots’ behind Formula One’s social media campaign

Daniel Ricciardo has expressed displeasure with Formula 1’s social media team and their glorifying of major crashes as an attempt to garner audience and fan interests. The Australian further stated that he believes the sport needs to grow up and focus on other aspects of F1.

In an interview with a British magazine, ‘Square Mile,’ Ricciardo said, “I think last year, F1 put on their social channels, like, ‘top 10 moments of the year’ or something, and eight of the 10 were crashes, I was just like, you guys are f***ing idiots.”

“Maybe 12-year-old kids want to see that kind of content,” he added “and that’s cool because they don’t know any better, but we’re not kids. Just do better, guys. Do better than that.”

Ricciardo also stated he’d taken the matter to F1’s director of marketing and communications Ellie Norman. “I think she was very understanding and appreciative, and I think also accepted my concerns as well,” he said. “She didn’t push back, I think she was trying to listen and learn as well, how they could maybe do things differently.”

This is not the first time Ricciardo has shown such sentiments. Last year, after Romain Grosjean’s fiery crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Ricciardo was quoted saying he was “disappointed and disgusted by Formula 1” as they replayed the crash several times. Something he found to be inconsiderate to Romain’s family.
