This year’s British Grand Prix has been announced as the first of three events to trial the new ‘sprint qualifying’ format. The historic Silverstone circuit is one of the two European races expected to trial the format with one additional fly-away race to be announced soon.
The revised weekend format will see Friday’s Free Practice Two replaced with the now traditional three-part-qualifying session in order to set the grid for a 100km sprint race to be held on Saturday. This sprint race will set the grid for the main race on Sunday.
Stuart Pringle, Silverstone’s managing director, has said, “We are incredibly excited that Silverstone fans will be the first to experience the Formula One sprint qualifying format at this year’s British Grand Prix.” “We have not seen a major timetable shake-up in the sport for many years and I appreciate the continued efforts being made by Formula One and the FIA to enhance the entertainment on track.”
Silverstone typically sees some of the largest crowds on the Formula One calendar – particularly for Friday and Saturday sessions when compared to other venues. This will ensure no shortage of spectators to enjoy this year’s race weekend, especially following the restrictions of 2020 and the ban on crowds of which prevented the motorsport-hungry British public from enjoying the sport.
