Women have played an influential role throughout the history of motor racing. Many have taken to the wheels of motorsport machines, while numerous figures have worked tirelessly on the sidelines in various roles, shaping the racing world to the present day.
Woman Spotlight Wednesday aims to take a look at the tales of these superwomen, who have surpassed various hurdles to reach where they are today.
This week, we spotlight Emma Felbermayr, a 17-year-old racing driver from Wels, accelerating her way into the motorsport elite. The Sauber junior is set to create history as the first Austrian woman to compete in F1 Academy in 2025.
With a recent announcement that she will represent the Sauber F1 Team in the 2025 F1 Academy season, Felbermayr is proving that talent, determination, and a deep passion for racing can turn dreams into reality.
Motorsport dynasty Felbermayr: A legacy in her veins
Born into a family steeped in motorsport tradition, Emma's journey was almost predestined.
Her late grandfather Horst Felbermayr Sr. was a prominent figure in endurance racing.
He competed in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, with father Horst Felbermayr Jr keeping the family tradition going.
However, Emma’s path is uniquely her own. She began her racing career in karting at the age of seven.
Her family's achievements have undoubtedly fuelled her drive to forge her own path in racing, making her the first Austrian woman to compete in the series — a fitting continuation of the Felbermayr racing heritage.
Felbermayr’s early career saw her excel in multiple classes, consistently proving her skill and achieving notable success, including a runner-up finish in the 2021 ADAC Ladies Cup.
Most recently, she competed at a high level in the WSK Karting Series and the World and European Championships in 2024.
Emma Felbermayr stepping up from karting to F1 Academy
Emma’s big break came when she was selected to join the Sauber Driver Academy — operated by Rodin Motorsport, a milestone signalling her transition from karting to the world of single-seaters.
The F1 Academy, a premier developmental series aimed at fostering young talent—especially women in motorsport—is the perfect stage for Emma to continue her ascent.
Speaking about her future with Sauber, Emma shared her excitement:
"I am thrilled to join the KICK Sauber F1 Team for the 2025 F1 Academy season. This is an incredible opportunity to take the next step in my career and challenge myself at this exciting level."
Felbermayr’s season will kick off with the season opener in Shanghai, China, from March 21 to 23, 2025, but she won’t stop there.
In addition to her F1 Academy commitments, the Sauber junior will participate in the 2025 Formula Winter Series and the Spanish F4 Championship with Rodin Motorsport, giving her valuable track time and experience in a competitive single-seater racing environment.
Felbermayr’s entry into the F1 Academy not only highlights her personal achievements, but also highlights the increasing opportunities for women in motorsport. Her progress will be closely followed, as she embarks on this new chapter with the Sauber F1 Team.
Traditionally male-dominated, motorsport is now experiencing a much-needed shift, with initiatives like the F1 Academy paving the way for talented young women like Emma to shine.
“We are delighted to welcome Emma to the team as she prepares to race in our colours at the F1 Academy,” said Sauber Motorsport Managing Director Mattia Binotto.
"Emma is young but has already shown her potential and we are looking forward to seeing her on the international stage for us from next year onwards — welcome to the family.”
A Role Model for the Next Generation
Emma Felbermayr’s story is one of determination, perseverance, and breaking through barriers. She stands as a role model for aspiring racers worldwide, showing that with hard work and passion, anything is possible.
As Emma embarks on this thrilling new chapter in her career, many will be cheering her on every step of the way. Keep an eye on this rising star — her journey is only just beginning.
